A barn is an agricultural building typically on farms and used for various functions. From the North American region, a barn refers to structures which house livestock, such as cattle and horses, as well as gear and fodder and frequently grain. As a result, the expression barn is frequently qualified e.g. tobacco barn, dairy barn, sheep barn, potato barn. From the British Isles, the expression duplex is confined mainly to storage structures for unthreshed cereals and fodder, the terms byre or shippon being employed to cow shelters, whereas horses have been kept in buildings called stables. On the Continent, however, barns were frequently a part of integrated structures called byre-dwellings (or even housebarns in US literature). Additionally, barns might be used for gear storage, as a covered workplace, and for activities like threshing.
