A window blind is a kind of window covering. There are many distinct kinds of window blinds which use a variety of control systems. A typical window blind is composed of a number of long horizontal or vertical slats of various kinds of tough material, such as wood, metal or plastic which are held together by wires that run through the blind slats. Window blinds can be maneuvered with a manual or remote control by rotating them by an open place, with slats spaced outside, to a closed place where slats overlap and block most of the light. Additionally, there are a number of kinds of window coverings, known as colors, that use one piece of soft cloth instead of slats.
The period window blinds may also be used to spell out window coverings generically--in this circumstance window blinds include virtually every kind of window covering, i.e. shutters, roller blinds, cellular shades (also known as honeycomb colors), wood blinds (also known as two inch horizontals), Roman blinds and regular vertical and horizontal blinds (also known as Venetians). In the United Kingdom, awnings are sometimes called shades or blinds.|}
