A window blind is a type of window covering. There are several distinct kinds of window blinds that use a variety of control systems. A typical window blind is composed of a number of long horizontal or vertical slats of various kinds of hard material, including wood, plastic or metal that are held together by wires that run through the blind slats. Window blinds can be maneuvered with either a manual or remote control by rotating them from an open position, with slats spaced outside, to a closed position where slats overlap and block out the majority of the light. There are also a number of kinds of window coverings, known as shades, that use one piece of soft cloth instead of slats.
The period window blinds can also be used to describe window coverings generically--in this context window blinds include almost every type of window covering, i.e. shutters, roller blinds, cellular shades (also known as honeycomb shades), wood blinds (also known as two inch horizontals), Roman blinds and regular vertical and horizontal blinds (also known as Venetians). In the United Kingdom, awnings are sometimes called shades or blinds.|}
