A window blind is a type of window covering. There are many distinct kinds of window blinds that use a number of control systems. A typical window blind is composed of several long horizontal or vertical slats of various kinds of tough material, such as wood, plastic or metal that are held together by wires that run through the blind slats. Window blinds could be maneuvered with a manual or remote control by rotating them from an open position, with slats spaced outside, to a closed position where slats overlap and block out the majority of the light. There are also several kinds of window coverings, called shades, that use one piece of soft cloth instead of slats.
The period window blinds can also be used to spell out window coverings generically--within this circumstance window blinds include almost every type of window covering, i.e. shutters, roller blinds, cellular shades (also called honeycomb shades), wood blinds (also called two inch horizontals), Roman blinds and standard vertical and horizontal blinds (also called Venetians). In the United Kingdom, awnings are sometimes called shades or blinds.|}
