A window blind is a type of window covering. There are many different sorts of window blinds that use a number of control systems. A typical window blind is made up of a number of long horizontal or vertical slats of different kinds of hard material, such as wood, plastic or metal that are held together by wires that run through the blind slats. Window blinds can be maneuvered with either a manual or remote control by rotating them from an open place, together with slats spaced outside, to a closed place where slats float and block out most of the light. Additionally, there are a number of kinds of window coverings, known as colors, that use a single piece of soft cloth rather than pliers.
The term window blinds may also be used to describe window coverings generically--within this circumstance window blinds include almost every type of window covering, i.e. shutters, roller blinds, cellular shades (also known as honeycomb colors), wood blinds (also known as two inch horizontals), Roman blinds and regular vertical and horizontal blinds (also known as Venetians). In the United Kingdom, awnings are sometimes called shades or blinds.|}
